VNC installation

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is a remote control software which allows you to view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the "viewer") on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don't even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view an office Linux machine on your Windows PC at home. VNC is freely and publicly available.

 

Download and installation steps fror VNC:

  • Click here to go to the VNC download page at RealVNC.
  • Select "Windows 9x/2000/NT/XP (x86)" under Installable Packages.
  • "Proceed to download"
  • Scroll down to "Download Area" and "full installation (server and viewer)", then click on "executable (.exe)". The download size is 563K.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.

Make sure VNC Server is selected

Select "Register VNC Server as a system service"
Select "Start the VNC Server system service"

In the password field, type in a password of your choice (or use westpole)
  • Your workstation is ready to receive a VNC connection now.
  • If you would like to disable VNC, go to the Start Menu, under Programs look for RealVNC, VNC Server, click on Unregister VNC Server Service.
  • If you would like to re-enable VNC, go to the Start Menu, under Programs look for RealVNC, VNC Server, click on Rregister VNC Server Service.

Advanced configuration:

To have VNC listen in on a different port, uncheck the Auto and change the display number to a number between 0 and 99.
